Biography

Jonathan read music at Bristol University, winning both university undergraduate and British Academy postgraduate arts scholarships. He later studied conducting with George Hurst. He is an Associate Artist of Longborough Festival Opera where his repertoire has included a critically acclaimed Janáček cycle: Jenůfa, Katya Kabanová and The Cunning Little Vixen. He has conducted regularly for West Green House Opera since 2000, most recently Ariadne auf Naxos, Candide and La Rondine. He is Music Director of Opera Project, which he co-founded in 1993, and Music Director of Mid Wales Opera with whom he has conducted Eugene Onegin, The Magic Flute, The Marriage of Figaro, Tosca, Semele and Dido and Aeneas. His many reduced orchestrations of operas are performed extensively worldwide and his arrangement of Walton’s The Bear, published by OUP, was recently filmed by Opera Holland Park.

Only a few months ago we thought Mid Wales Opera was finished. Now, thanks to a funding lifeline from Powys County Council, we are within touching distance of having a sustainable plan to keep on producing live and local opera across Wales for at least three years.
