Born in Cumbria, Peter studied at Leeds University, the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama and the National Opera Studio. He has sung extensively for all the major UK opera companies including English National Opera, Scottish Opera and Welsh National Opera (for whom his roles have included Sir Bruno Robertson I Puritani, The Schoolmaster The Cunning Little Vixen and Valzacchi Der Rosenkavalier). He sang Hotel Porter Death in Venice (La Scala Milan, La Monnaie and English National Opera) now on Opus Arte DVD and his recordings also include The Schoolmaster / Mosquito / Grasshopper The Cunning Little Vixen (Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin) for BBC TV.
