Biography

Richard is Artistic Director of Mid Wales Opera. He made his professional debut in 1994 with Don Giovanni at The Bristol Old Vic and has since produced over a hundred productions spanning repertoire from Monteverdi to Philip Glass at festivals and theatres across the UK. He is an Associate Director of Longborough Festival Opera directing both Britten and Janáček works for the festival. He is co-founder and Artistic Director of Opera Project with whom he has had a longstanding collaboration with the award winning Tobacco Factory Theatres, Bristol. Equally at home in music theatre, recent projects include Bernstein’s Candide for West Green House Opera. Productions for Mid Wales Opera: The Magic Flute, Walton’s The Bear, Eugene Onegin and Ravel’s A Spanish Hour (which he also translated). Forthcoming productions include Die Fledermaus for West Green House and The Barber of Seville for TFTS. He is currently working in collaboration with Jonathan Lyness on a new one-act opera based on John Gay’s The Beggar’s opera – ‘Mrs Peachum’s Guide to Love and Marriage’, to be premiered in autumn 2019 with MWO.
