Biography

Jonathan read music at Bristol University and later studied conducting with George Hurst. He is Music Director of Mid Wales Opera, Associate Artist of Longborough Festival Opera and Music Director of Opera Project, which he co-founded in 1993. Recent conducting work includes The Barber of Seville for OP, a Janáček cycle Jenufa, Katya Kabanová and The Cunning Little Vixen for LFO, Ariadne auf Naxos and Candide for West Green House Opera and The Magic Flute, Eugene Onegin and Tosca for MWO. His many reduced orchestrations of operas are performed extensively across the world and his arrangement of Walton’s The Bear, performed on MWO SmallStages tour, will be published by OUP.

Only a few months ago we thought Mid Wales Opera was finished. Now, thanks to a funding lifeline from Powys County Council, we are within touching distance of having a sustainable plan to keep on producing live and local opera across Wales for at least three years.
